26/09/2022

Codex standards and the AMR Codex Texts (ACT) project will be presented at the Second MFDS Global Conference on Antimicrobial Resistance, which will take place in Seoul, Korea on 27-28 September 2022. The event will be organized by the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS), the Republic of Korea.

Codex Secretary Tom Heilandt will talk about Codex Standards on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and will stress the importance of their implementation. There will be a special session to introduce the ACT project. FAO representatives will explain the importance and the expected outcomes of this project, the FAO tools to support and monitor the implementation of AMR Codex standards, as well as how to catalyze the implementation of integrated surveillance and good practice through capacity building and data services. The representative of Mongolia, one of the project’s focus countries, will share their experience and lessons learned while implementing this project. A Question & Answer session, moderated by Jeffrey LeJeune, Lead Technical Officer of the ACT project, will discuss the way forward.

“Nearly 5 million deaths every year are associated with AMR. There is no time to wait, we need to act now. This conference is a great opportunity to have a discussion on AMR and strengthen international collaboration, share our knowledge and ideas. The ACT project, supported by the Government of Korea, will lead to better management of foodborne AMR in six focus countries in Asia and South America. Currently, we have started the assessment of the situation in the target countries. Based on those results, effective interventions to promote the adoption of Codex standards are being planned,” explained Myoengsin Choi, ACT Project Coordinator.

The conference, which will be a hybrid meeting, will discuss the international endeavours to reduce foodborne AMR. If you would like to attend the conference, please register here: Registration (mfdsgcfa.kr)
