Codex Executive Committee 82nd session underway
In opening remarks to the 82nd session of the Executive Committee of the Codex Alimentarius Commission, taking place virtually from 20-24 June 2022, Maria-Helena Semedo, Deputy Director-General FAO recalled the vital role science-based analytical tools and normative work play in providing support to countries, especially in response to the worsening global food security situation due to the pandemic, disasters, conflict and climate change.

“The work you oversee here in the Executive Committee is a key part of these endeavors and as one of the two parent organization we look to see continued commitments and action to deliver on your priorities which are our priorities,” she said.
Naoko Yamamoto, Assistant Director-General, WHO, underlined the importance of Codex food safety and nutrition standards and guidelines being clearly based on science. “To be relevant and fit for purpose, these standards and guidelines should also consider contextual factors and situations in different countries or areas in the world. This is extremely important because the global food environment is rapidly changing and posing multiple challenges for Codex,” she said.

Codex Chairperson Steve Wearne, United Kingdom, also addressed delegates during the opening of the session. “I’m confident that, in our discussions over the next five days, we will successfully deliver our shared mission to assist in the management of the Commission’s programme of standards development, to make proposals on the orientation and programming of the Commission’s work, and to advise on special problems, all in the best interests of Codex and its Members.
