39th Session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission

Delegates from 188 Member Countries will be meeting in Rome from June 27 for 5 days of discussion and debate at the 39th session of the Codex Alimentarius Commission to adopt new international standards and guidelines regarding food safety and fair practices in food trade.

This annual meeting is an opportunity to adopt new international standards on topics including:

  • Guidelines for the control of non-typhoidal Salmonella spp. in beef and pork meat
  • Guidelines on the application of general principles of food hygiene to the control of foodborne parasites
  • Nutrient reference values for labelling purposes in the guidelines on nutrition labelling
  • Standards on the safety of food additives, pesticide residues in food, and arsenic levels in rice
  • Revision of Codex’s General Principles of Food Hygiene and its HACCP Annex
  • Future work of the Commission on antimicrobial resistance

Delegates and members will also learn which countries will be the first beneficiaries of the new Codex Trust Fund which will help countries build their capacity to engage effectively in the work of Codex.

In addition, there will be side-events on whole genome sequencing and food safety and the global burden of
Foodborne diseases.
