Food safety advocates and professional training organization, Veraliment, held its third consecutive annual World Food Safety Day event on 7 June this year. In a live webinar, "Culture of Safety 360°," the focus was on “all those actors that are necessary to implement a correct Culture of Safety.”

Participants included Gemma Trigueros, food expert at consumer rights organization, OCU, Maria Claudia Degrossi, member of the Testing Laboratory Accreditation Committee, and Andrés García, CEO of Veraliment.

The round table discussion was moderated by Fernando del Pino, Senior Technician for Food Safety, Quality and Environment at Nutrave, and included questions from listeners. "We have to make it clear to companies that unsafe food can cost lives," Andrés García stated during his intervention, pushing for a company-wide Culture of Safety. On paper, companies are required to ensure a “Culture of Safety,” which is why there are standards such as the IFS and BRC, but the ‘Culture of Safety’ should not just involve documentation, because its value goes further.

At the heart of the Codex mandate are the core values of collaboration, inclusiveness, consensus building and transparency. Governmental and non-governmental, public and private organizations alike play a vital role in ensuring Codex texts are of the highest quality and based on sound science.

Codex would have little authority in the field of international standard setting if it did not welcome and acknowledge the valuable contributions made by observers. Expert technical bodies, industry and consumer associations contribute to the standard-setting process in a spirit of openness, collaboration and transparency.

Intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can apply for observer status in Codex in order to attend and put forward their views at every stage of the standard-setting process.

Codex and Observer

Food is a sensitive commodity, which has travelled
around the world since ancient times.
We might not always know where it comes from,
but we expect it to be available, safe and of good quality.
