World Food Safety Day in North Macedonia

As a national Codex Contact Point for North Macedonia, the Food and Veterinary Agency joined the global campaign in the celebration of June 7 - World Food Safety Day. The aim of the initiative was to bring together different stakeholders involved in the food chain and through a public debate to raise awareness for food safety as well as inform the public about the importance of preventing and managing the risks associated with food, promoting health, economic prosperity, agricultural development and markets.

Under this year's theme of the World Food Safety Day - "Safe food now, for a healthy tomorrow", the Food and Veterinary Agency hosted an event, where representatives of science, institutions competent for food safety, economic chambers and NGOs discussed the EU Farm to Fork Strategy, the perspectives and challenges in primary production in terms of food safety, integrated plant protection, flexible application of food safety system rules through the prism of the consumers. The use of nutrition and health claims and the procedures to their authorization, AMR, as well as novel foods as 21st century challenge, were also discussed during the event

At the heart of the Codex mandate are the core values of collaboration, inclusiveness, consensus building and transparency. Governmental and non-governmental, public and private organizations alike play a vital role in ensuring Codex texts are of the highest quality and based on sound science.

Codex would have little authority in the field of international standard setting if it did not welcome and acknowledge the valuable contributions made by observers. Expert technical bodies, industry and consumer associations contribute to the standard-setting process in a spirit of openness, collaboration and transparency.

Intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can apply for observer status in Codex in order to attend and put forward their views at every stage of the standard-setting process.
