The Food Safety Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan (AFSA), together with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Azerbaijan, continues its series of promotional events, following its initial awareness-raising initiative in food outlets across the country.

As part of the ongoing efforts, Azerbaijani officials recorded a series of video addresses. AFSA Chairman, Goshgar Tahmazli, recorded a message in which he emphasized the importance of food safety and then handed over to the head of the FAO Partnership and Liaison Office in the Republic of Azerbaijan, Melek Cakmak. In his video address, Melek Cakmak said that everyone has a responsibility to ensure food safety, and introduced the UN Resident Coordinator in Azerbaijan Gulam Isaczai.

The Minister of Labour and Social Protection, Sahil Babayev, Minister of Ecology and Natural Resources, Mukhtar Babayev, and Minister of Agriculture, Inam Karimov, then contributed to the video campaign.

Government officials and heads of international organizations took the opportunity of World Food Safety Day to stress the commitment of the parties involved in the food chain and the importance of collective participation in the food production process.

This video campaign will continue into next week with different agencies joining in. The Azerbaijani Representative for the World Health Organization (WHO), Dr Hande Harmanci, and European Union (EU) Ambassador, Mr Kestutis Jankauskas, will add their video messages.

At the heart of the Codex mandate are the core values of collaboration, inclusiveness, consensus building and transparency. Governmental and non-governmental, public and private organizations alike play a vital role in ensuring Codex texts are of the highest quality and based on sound science.

Codex would have little authority in the field of international standard setting if it did not welcome and acknowledge the valuable contributions made by observers. Expert technical bodies, industry and consumer associations contribute to the standard-setting process in a spirit of openness, collaboration and transparency.

Intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can apply for observer status in Codex in order to attend and put forward their views at every stage of the standard-setting process.

Food is a sensitive commodity, which has travelled
around the world since ancient times.
We might not always know where it comes from,
but we expect it to be available, safe and of good quality.
