If World Food Safety Day is about spreading information about food safety, then the Zhe Jiang University’s 2020 project must be declared a roaring success. The Department of Food Science and Nutrition team in the College of Biosystems Engineering and Food Science, Zhe Jiang University, established a “Food Safety Popularization on Campus” project for World Food Safety Day last year, with the aim of educating young people through basic science lectures, micro-class competitions, webcasts, theatrical performances and a free app.

Since their 7 June event last year, children from ten schools in the Hangzhou province have taken part in more than forty exciting activities devised by the team, which is led by Professor Shen Lirong. And the team’s activities haven’t stopped there. As World Food Safety Day 2021 approaches, they are continuing with their successes and have recently spent time at West Lake Primary school, where the children have said they’d like to be involved in any other activities and have already told friends, parents and relatives about what they’ve learnt. The University department has dubbed them “little angels spreading knowledge about food safety” as it continues with its successful model.

At the heart of the Codex mandate are the core values of collaboration, inclusiveness, consensus building and transparency. Governmental and non-governmental, public and private organizations alike play a vital role in ensuring Codex texts are of the highest quality and based on sound science.

Codex would have little authority in the field of international standard setting if it did not welcome and acknowledge the valuable contributions made by observers. Expert technical bodies, industry and consumer associations contribute to the standard-setting process in a spirit of openness, collaboration and transparency.

Intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can apply for observer status in Codex in order to attend and put forward their views at every stage of the standard-setting process.

Codex and Observer

Food is a sensitive commodity, which has travelled
around the world since ancient times.
We might not always know where it comes from,
but we expect it to be available, safe and of good quality.
