Food quality and safety is key to achieve the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and the growing population is pressuring food producers to provide a sufficient supply of healthy, safe and accessible food. On the second observance of World Food Safety Day (7 June 2020), Food Nation used the occasion to promote the Danish food quality and safety and urge action by highlighting what everyone can do to ensure food safety.

This happened, among other things, during a webinar on Monday June 8, where Food Nation along with two speakers took a closer look at the demands of food and agriculture companies and how to use the Danish strengths within food quality and safety in sales and marketing work. The two speakers were Esben Egede, Executive Director from the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration and Søren Tinggaard, Vice President, Pork Export Strategy & Marketing in Danish Crown who gave their insights on how food quality and safety gives Denmark a strong international position on export markets and how the high level of food quality and safety has been central to Danish Crown's attainment of its international position. Furthermore, the Danish minister for food, Mogens Jensen, sent his greetings in a short video and called for increased cooperation to find the solutions of tomorrow.

At the heart of the Codex mandate are the core values of collaboration, inclusiveness, consensus building and transparency. Governmental and non-governmental, public and private organizations alike play a vital role in ensuring Codex texts are of the highest quality and based on sound science.

Codex would have little authority in the field of international standard setting if it did not welcome and acknowledge the valuable contributions made by observers. Expert technical bodies, industry and consumer associations contribute to the standard-setting process in a spirit of openness, collaboration and transparency.

Intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can apply for observer status in Codex in order to attend and put forward their views at every stage of the standard-setting process.

Codex and Observer

Food is a sensitive commodity, which has travelled
around the world since ancient times.
We might not always know where it comes from,
but we expect it to be available, safe and of good quality.
