The China National Centre for Food Safety Risk Assessment (CFSA) organized a series of online activities to celebrate the second World Food Safety Day (WFSD) on 7 June 2020. The aim of these activities was to raise consumer awareness of food safety under the theme "Food safety, everyone’s business".  CFSA launched a special column on its website to promote food safety and call upon consumers to take action to prevent foodborne diseases. Consumers could read and participate in various virtual events including online lectures, animation videos, booklets and flyers on specific food safety topics on CFSA website.

One of the highlights is the video talk recorded by Chief Scientific Advisor of CFSA, Dr Junshi Chen, to explain food safety risk assessment in China. In addition, Dr Yongxiang Fan, Chair of the Codex Committee on Food Additives (CCFA), reviewed the development of China national food safety standards in another video talk.

CFSA pursues its objective to get more consumers involved in the promotion of food safety and reduce the occurrence of foodborne diseases, even beyond World Food Safety Day.

At the heart of the Codex mandate are the core values of collaboration, inclusiveness, consensus building and transparency. Governmental and non-governmental, public and private organizations alike play a vital role in ensuring Codex texts are of the highest quality and based on sound science.

Codex would have little authority in the field of international standard setting if it did not welcome and acknowledge the valuable contributions made by observers. Expert technical bodies, industry and consumer associations contribute to the standard-setting process in a spirit of openness, collaboration and transparency.

Intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can apply for observer status in Codex in order to attend and put forward their views at every stage of the standard-setting process.

Codex and Observer

Food is a sensitive commodity, which has travelled
around the world since ancient times.
We might not always know where it comes from,
but we expect it to be available, safe and of good quality.
