Jan 29, 2020, 21:14 PM by System

The Codex Secretariat is monitoring the current situation in China regarding the outbreak of novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) via WHO daily updates and the advice from the International Health Regulations (2005) Emergency Committee. Codex is also consulting closely with the Chinese authorities via the Codex Committee on Food Additives (CCFA) and Pesticide Residues (CCPR) Host Secretariats.

As reported on the WHO website on 29 January 2020, the Emergency Committee on the novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) will be reconvened by the World Health Organization Director-General Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus on Thursday, 30 January.

The Committee will advise the Director-General on whether the outbreak constitutes a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC), and what recommendations should be made to manage it.

Codex will continue to monitor the situation and will communicate any decisions regarding the planned sessions of CCFA and CCPR as soon as they have been made.

At the heart of the Codex mandate are the core values of collaboration, inclusiveness, consensus building and transparency. Governmental and non-governmental, public and private organizations alike play a vital role in ensuring Codex texts are of the highest quality and based on sound science.

Codex would have little authority in the field of international standard setting if it did not welcome and acknowledge the valuable contributions made by observers. Expert technical bodies, industry and consumer associations contribute to the standard-setting process in a spirit of openness, collaboration and transparency.

Intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can apply for observer status in Codex in order to attend and put forward their views at every stage of the standard-setting process.

Codex and Observer

Food is a sensitive commodity, which has travelled
around the world since ancient times.
We might not always know where it comes from,
but we expect it to be available, safe and of good quality.
