World Food Safety Day in Brussels

On the first ever World Food Safety Day, the FAO Liaison Office with the European Union and Belgium (FAOLOB) partnered with the local non-profit, Cultureghem. The European Regional Development Fund co-financed project is located in the area of Kuregem in Anderlecht, Brussels, next to the 40 000 square meter central marketplace of Abattoir which attracts over 100 000 visitors every week. The market is one of the biggest in Belgium. Each week, Cultureghem organizes different workshops such as cooking meals from unsold fruit and vegetables and runs educational healthy cooking sessions for people of all ages.

On 7 June 2019, FAOLOB’s Nils Janssens organized a multimedia presentation and engaged around 100 participants during a cooking workshop. 80 public servants from the Belgian Ministry of Finance and 20 local students as well as the Cultureghem staff themselves (including the head Chef) gathered for a conversation in Dutch, French and English on the do’s and don’ts of food safety.

"FAO partnered with Cultureghem at this bustling open-air cooking area that is the Abattoir Market in Brussels, to show that Food Safety is more than keeping food safe. It is about bringing people together to connect, cook and share tips for a safe and healthy meal", said Myrto Arvaniti, Communications Officer at FAOLOB.

During the event, participants learnt about the work of FAO and picked up practical tips to take into account during the cooking they would be doing in the workshops later in the day. Participants also received materials on practical tips on food safety at home.

At the heart of the Codex mandate are the core values of collaboration, inclusiveness, consensus building and transparency. Governmental and non-governmental, public and private organizations alike play a vital role in ensuring Codex texts are of the highest quality and based on sound science.

Codex would have little authority in the field of international standard setting if it did not welcome and acknowledge the valuable contributions made by observers. Expert technical bodies, industry and consumer associations contribute to the standard-setting process in a spirit of openness, collaboration and transparency.

Intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can apply for observer status in Codex in order to attend and put forward their views at every stage of the standard-setting process.

Food is a sensitive commodity, which has travelled
around the world since ancient times.
We might not always know where it comes from,
but we expect it to be available, safe and of good quality.
