Working with OIE on Salmonellosis in pigs and cattle

Dec 9, 2015, 10:16 AM by System

The Codex Secretariat is participating in the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) working group on Salmonellosis in pig and in cattle taking place at OIE HQ in Paris, 8-10 December 2015.

This ad-hoc working group will further revise the draft chapters of the OIE Animal Terrestrial Health Code on Salmonellosis in pigs and cattle, taking into account the comments of the OIE members and Codex work on the guidelines for the Control of non-thyphoidal Salmonella spp. in beef and pork meat, recently finalised by the Codex Food Hygiene Committee.

Codex OIE Collaboration

The work carried out on Salmonella in Codex and OIE is a further example of the close collaboration of Codex and OIE in the development of standards relevant to the whole food production chain. Working together ensures effective coordination and harmonisation of work to benefit producers, traders and consumers in the fields of food safety and animal health.

At the heart of the Codex mandate are the core values of collaboration, inclusiveness, consensus building and transparency. Governmental and non-governmental, public and private organizations alike play a vital role in ensuring Codex texts are of the highest quality and based on sound science.

Codex would have little authority in the field of international standard setting if it did not welcome and acknowledge the valuable contributions made by observers. Expert technical bodies, industry and consumer associations contribute to the standard-setting process in a spirit of openness, collaboration and transparency.

Intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can apply for observer status in Codex in order to attend and put forward their views at every stage of the standard-setting process.

Codex and Observer

Food is a sensitive commodity, which has travelled
around the world since ancient times.
We might not always know where it comes from,
but we expect it to be available, safe and of good quality.
