The 24th Session of the joint FAO/WHO Food Standards Programme Codex Committee on Fats and Oils will be held in Melaka, Malaysia, 9–13 February 2015.

Items on the agenda include a proposed Draft Standard for Fish Oils; review of the List of Acceptable Previous Cargoes; discussions on reference to acceptance and voluntary application in the standards for fats and oils, amendment of the Standard for Named Vegetable Oils as well as Discussion Papers on Cold Pressed Oils and on the amendment of the Standard for Olive Oils and Olive Pomace Oils.

"We expect the meeting to make good progress on the Standard of Fish Oils and the review on the list of acceptable cargoes and to take a decision on the inclusion of new provisions to the standards for Named Vegetables Oils and on Olive Oils and Olive Pomace Oils." said Senior Food Standards Officer Annamaria Bruno.

Patrick Sekitoleko, Food Standards Officer, also attending the meeting as a member of the Codex Secretariat added: "The meeting is also expected to reflect on the how the Committee on Fats and Oils can contribute both to the implementation of the Codex Strategic Plan and on developing its linkages with other Codex Committees."

At the heart of the Codex mandate are the core values of collaboration, inclusiveness, consensus building and transparency. Governmental and non-governmental, public and private organizations alike play a vital role in ensuring Codex texts are of the highest quality and based on sound science.

Codex would have little authority in the field of international standard setting if it did not welcome and acknowledge the valuable contributions made by observers. Expert technical bodies, industry and consumer associations contribute to the standard-setting process in a spirit of openness, collaboration and transparency.

Intergovernmental organizations (IGOs) and international non-governmental organizations (NGOs) can apply for observer status in Codex in order to attend and put forward their views at every stage of the standard-setting process.

Codex and Observer

Food is a sensitive commodity, which has travelled
around the world since ancient times.
We might not always know where it comes from,
but we expect it to be available, safe and of good quality.
